Viewing Figures - AI for Christmas Special

The Audience Appreciation Index score for "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe" was 84. This is a score out of a hundred and measures how much the audience enjoyed the programme. 84 is in the "excellent" category and most other shows on Christmas Day averaged around 82.

"The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe" was the second highest score of the day - only beaten by "Downton Abbey" which had an amazing 92 AI.

Review - "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe"

The rules pertaining to a "Doctor Who" Christmas episode are somewhat different to that of a normal episode. There are three things that need to be taken into account. First, there will probably be a large number of casual viewers who may only have ever seen one or two episodes before - therefore the Christmas episode has to essentially be standalone. Secondly, it cannot be a complex story. After all, your viewers are tuning in after being stuffed full of turkey - not to mention the odd beer or two. Thirdly - and perhaps the most obvious point - it HAS to be Christmassy. "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe" can be held up as a prime example of a Christmas episode - with the added bonus of a high emotional impact throughout.

The pre-credits sequence was utterly breath-taking - visually stunning and highly charged as the Doctor dashes through exploding corridors and plummets to Earth after the falling spacesuit. Having "arrived" on Earth -lying prone in a crater with his helmet on backwards - Madge Arwell comes to his aid and helps him to find the Tardis. This is where a small piece of dialogue serves to highlight the difference between 11 and some of his predecessors. The "make a wish...that usually works" comment - apart from raising a smile - gives a nod towards 11, for all his goofy excitability, being less of an "avenging angel" Doctor and more of a cross between Santa and Peter Pan.

Overnight Viewing Figures

The initial overnight viewing figures have been released and "The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe" took the third spot in the chart.

"Eastenders" was top with 9.9million, "Coronation Street" second with 9.3million and "Doctor Who" came third with an excellent 8.9million. "Downton Abbey" was in fourth with 8.6million.

The final BARB figures which take into account those who record and watch it within a week should be released next week.

Great result for "Doctor Who" though.

End in sight for the Ponds...

At the press screening of "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe", Steven Moffat made an announcement - confirmed by the BBC Doctor Who Twitter account - that hasn't really come as too much of a surprise:
"The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series - that story will come to a heartbreaking end. Then the Doctor will meet a new friend"

Matt Smith, also attending the press screening, commented:
"The show will miss the Ponds, brilliantly played by Karen & Arthur, but the great thing about Doctor Who is its ability to change. It's very disappointing - but this show is about change and regeneration."

More details of the new "friend" have been promised by the BBC tomorrow - but the role has not been cast yet.

The Moff also said that he thinks River Song WILL return...

Two Classic Episodes Returned to the BBC

The BBC have confirmed that 2 formerly missing Doctor Who episodes have been returned to their archives. The episodes are "Galaxy Four" episode 3 and "The Underwater Menace" episode 2. It's always cause for celebration when one episode is returned...and it's almost unheard of for two episodes to find their way back.

The Radio Times article - "Two Long-Lost episodes recovered" is a fantastic read and shows how these episodes came to light. The episodes were screened as a surprise at the BFI this evening.

Let's hope for more finds in the near future - and look forward to a possible "Missing Episodes" DVD release perhaps?

Claire Skinner and Alexander Armstrong talk about the Christmas Special

More interviews from the BBC Press Office - this time they interview both Claire Skinner and Alexander Armstrong. First up, Claire Skinner:

Who do you play in the Christmas Special?

I play a character called Madge Arwell who, first and foremost, is a mother. It just informs everything about her character. What I found attractive about the role is that she’s warm and a thoroughly decent woman, as well as being quite straight down the line. In the episode she gets tested and challenged and it’s interesting to see how she handles different things and adapts to various situations for the sake of her children.

What was it like working with Matt Smith?

Lovely! A really nice experience. He’s thoroughly charming, good fun and has loads of energy.

What about the other guest stars?

I’ve worked with Alexander Armstrong before, so it was great to see him again. We’ve actually been fishing together! Bill Bailey is just completely brilliant; a really nice, natural and funny bloke. And the children as well. Maurice and Holly were just delightful, completely lovely.

Are you a fan of Doctor Who?

Yes for several reasons actually. My son watches it, my husband has directed it before and my father in-law was in an episode. It’s a nice connection to have.

How did it feel being cast in such an iconic show?

I was very excited to be in it, both because it’s Doctor Who and also a great script. When I got the call I was like “Yay, at last I’m going to be in Doctor Who.”

How did you find filming on location?

We shot some scenes outside in a public space and it was an unusual experience acting in front of huge crowds of people who had come to watch. I had to drive a car down the road, which took about 500 takes, and they applauded my driving each time. It was lovely, but I hadn’t been quite ready for that.

What do you think is the scariest Doctor Who monster of all time?

It’s not exactly a monster, but the creepy people in the gas masks in series one were pretty scary. They definitely freaked both my children out at the time.

What will you be doing on Christmas day?

I will be with my family and my husband’s family; a traditional Christmas. We’ll of course be watching Doctor Who.

What other Christmas TV do you like?

I like traditional comedy; I’m such a fan of Morecambe and Wise. We’ve got the box set, so we always get that out at Christmas.

Matt Smith discusses "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe"

The BBC Press Office have released an interview with Matt Smith regarding "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe":

The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe is Matt Smith’s second Christmas outing as the Doctor and this time he doesn’t have his trusted companions, ‘The Ponds’, by his side. However, it hasn’t stopped him relishing in another Christmassy adventure and here he reveals what Doctor Who has in store for festive viewers.

“Doctor Who and Christmas go hand in hand don’t they?” laughs Matt Smith as he sits down to discuss the special episode of Who, penned by Steven Moffat. “It’s a brilliant and touching story about a family who have experienced a tragic event and in many ways they’ve had Christmas stolen from them.”

Matt reveals that Madge Arwell and her two young children, Lily and Cyril, have been evacuated during the Blitz to a ramshackled old house in the country where the Doctor has taken up residence as caretaker. “The Doctor, in a very ‘Doctory’ way, tries to bring Christmas spirit and cheer back into their lives,” explains Matt. “He has ‘Doctorified’ the house so to speak and there’s a magical present under the Christmas tree which is a portal to another world. Cyril enters it and discovers an enchanting landscape that encapsulates the beauty, danger and madness that is Doctor Who at Christmas.”

So will viewers be cowering behind their turkey and stuffing sandwiches on Christmas Day? “Well there are two scary characters that live in a huge tower and move in a very strange and menacing way,” confides Matt with a conspiratorial grin. “I also really enjoyed making this episode because the characters unfold in a subtle way and you never quite know what’s waiting around the corner. I also loved working with the guest cast who all seemed to have a whale of a time.”

The Doctor has had many festive adventures over the years but what are Matt’s favourite Christmas memories? “The best present I’ve ever had was a snooker table when I was a kid,” he reveals, “although my SEGA Mega Drive came close! I also used to love getting pyjamas and wearing them all day. Plus my granddad absolutely hates dressing gowns so it’s become a family tradition for us to buy him one every year and it always makes me laugh.”

And Matt’s recipe for the perfect Christmas?

“Family; everyone happy, healthy and together with lots of food, presents and good TV. Oh and football on Boxing Day! I’m really hoping for a white Christmas but if I couldn’t have a traditional Christmas I’d spend it somewhere really warm like South America or Australia and have a barbecue on the beach.”

Steven Moffat Introduces "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe"

The BBC Press Office have issued the following press release whereby Steven Moffat introduces "The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe":

"The Doctor at Christmas - it always just feels so right. When I was a kid, Santa and the Doctor somehow lived in the same place in my head - two generous madmen that I loved so much. So now that the Doctor is a regular feature of Christmas the world is just that bit more right.

"This time we're in England in the 1940s, and recently widowed Madge Arwell hasn't told her children, Lily and Cyril, that their father has died flying his bomber home over the channel, because she doesn't want Christmas to become the day that broke their hearts.

"But when they're evacuated to a draughty old house in Dorset for the holidays, and meet a mysterious young caretaker in a bow tie, events take an unexpected turn. What could be inside that big blue parcel under the tree?

"Soon the Arwells find themselves in a battle for survival in a magical new land. As ever, at this time of year, the Doctor is trying to make things right, and as always it doesn't go according to plan. But maybe he's reckoned without the power of a determined mother.

"This Christmas, it might just be the lonely Time Lord who's shown the way home."

Matt Smith talks about the Christmas Special

It's day two of the BBC's Doctor Who Adventure Calendar and today's little treat has Matt Smith talking about "The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe":

Videos - Forbidden Planet "Brilliant Book" Signing

Forbidden Planet have uploaded some videos from the recent "Brilliant Book" signing in London.

First, Gary Russell talks about the Encyclopedia:

Second, the Moff talks about HIS choice of companion:

The Moff talks about the "movie"

Steven Moffat took the opportunity to use twitter to calm some nerves and fears regarding the proposed movie this morning. He tweeted:
To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.
He later followed up with:
Movie thing: David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet. You've seen the rubbish I talk when I'm cornered.
This follows comments from David Yates on the red carpet at the 2011 Britannia Awards where he was interviewed by MTV - full article here. David Yates commented:
"I can't really talk about that because its such a long way away," Yates told MTV News. "We're principally looking for a writer, and we'll start with that. Everything has to start with a great script, so that's more important than [casting]."
So, still conflicting reports but as the saying goes: "In Moffat We Trust".

UPDATE: The Radio Times have an article regarding Steven Moffat and the proposed movie in which the Moff elaborates a bit further:
In a statement issued to a national newspaper, Moffat said that Doctor Who is “a vitally important BBC brand with a huge international audience” and one which “not even Hollywood can start from scratch”.

The producer also revealed that as yet “there simply are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment” but “if and when the movie happens it will need to star television's Doctor Who - and there's only ever one of those at a time.

"Whatever happens, the BBC and BBC Worldwide will work together to ensure that we don't just get a movie, we get the movie that everyone wants," he added.

I think that just about clears it up.
